Hydroelectric Power Generation IELTS Writing Samples
Prepared by Svarna Training Institute Academic Team
The diagram below shows how electricity is generated in a hydroelectric power station. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant. Write the report of at least 150 - 200 words describing the main details.
Candidate Naruto Uzumaki (Band 7 Answer)
The diagram illustrates the process of generating hydroelectric power using water stored in a reservoir. Overall, it shows how natural water movement is converted into electricity and then supplied to different users.
Initially, water from the sea evaporates due to heat from the sun, forming clouds. This water later falls as rain in mountainous areas and collects in a reservoir behind a dam. When the valve of the dam is opened, water flows down through a large pipe towards a turbine. The force of the moving water causes the turbine to rotate, which in turn drives a generator to produce electricity.
After passing through the turbine, the water continues to flow and is released back into the system. The electricity generated is then transmitted through high voltage cables to a transformer station. From there, it is distributed through underground cables to various places such as residential areas, hospitals, and schools.
In addition, pumps are shown in the diagram, which can move water back into the reservoir when needed, allowing the cycle to continue. Overall, hydroelectric power generation relies on both natural processes and mechanical equipment to produce electricity efficiently.

Candidate Tanjiro Kamado (Band 9 Answer)
The diagram illustrates the process by which hydroelectric power is produced, from natural water circulation to the distribution of electricity to end users. Overall, the system operates as a continuous cycle that converts the kinetic energy of flowing water into electrical power.
At the initial stage, solar heat causes seawater to evaporate, forming clouds that later release rain over mountainous regions. This rainfall accumulates in a reservoir situated behind a dam. When required, a valve is opened, allowing stored water to flow downward under pressure through a conduit toward a turbine.
As the water passes through the turbine, it causes the blades to rotate, which directly drives a generator to produce electricity. The generated power is then transmitted via high-voltage cables to a transformer station, where the voltage is adjusted for safe and efficient distribution. Subsequently, electricity is delivered through underground cables to residential areas as well as essential facilities such as hospitals and schools.
After driving the turbine, the water continues its flow and can be pumped back into the reservoir, enabling the system to operate repeatedly. This closed-loop process highlights how hydroelectric power efficiently combines natural forces with engineered mechanisms to generate sustainable energy.
