What’s New with IELTS Exam UAE?

Planning your IELTS exam in the UAE for late 2026 or early 2027? Several important test delivery changes are now in effect. As an official IDP IELTS test venue and Best IELTS Venue in the UAE 2020 winner, with Runner Up recognition from 2021-2023, Svarna’s IELTS Academic Team explains the latest IELTS UAE updates using official IELTS and IDP guidance.
One of the biggest changes to the IELTS exam UAE candidates need to understand is the move away from the traditional fully paper based test.
IELTS announced that paper based IELTS would be discontinued from mid 2026, with exact timelines varying by market. In the UAE, IDP confirmed that from 21 March 2026, all IELTS tests would be delivered on computer.
➜ Listening and Reading are now completed on a computer.
➜ Writing can be completed on computer or, at selected locations, through the new Writing on Paper option.
➜ Speaking continues with an IELTS examiner.
➜ The questions, scoring criteria and IELTS band scale have not changed simply because the delivery method has changed.
Not everyone thinks or writes comfortably on a keyboard. IELTS has recognised that. Candidates can now choose IELTS on Computer with Writing on Paper at selected test locations. This is not the return of the old paper based IELTS exam. It is a hybrid delivery option designed for candidates who prefer handwriting their Writing answers.
Listening and Reading are completed on computer. During Writing, the questions remain visible on the computer screen, but you write your answers by hand on an official IELTS Writing Answer Sheet. The option is available for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. It is not available for IELTS for UKVI, which remains fully digital.
➜ Faster results – IDP UAE says fully computer delivered IELTS results are typically available within 1-2 days. Writing on Paper results are normally available within five days.
➜ More test date flexibility – Computer delivery allows more frequent test dates and greater booking flexibility.
➜ More choice for Writing – If handwriting helps you think and structure answers better, selected Dubai sessions now offer Writing on Paper.
➜ Access to One Skill Retake – Eligible candidates can retake one skill instead of repeating all four sections.
IELTS fees in the UAE vary by test provider, test type and delivery option. IDP and British Council pricing can differ, while IELTS for UKVI, Writing on Paper, premium testing and One Skill Retake may carry different fees. Always confirm the final price on the official booking page before paying.

How it Works
➜ One Skill Retake is available after an eligible full IELTS on computer test taken at a centre that supports the service.
➜ You must sit your One Skill Retake within 60 days of the original full test, and only one One Skill Retake can be taken per eligible full test.
➜ You receive a new Test Report Form (TRF) showing the new score for the retaken skill and your original scores for the other three skills. Importantly, your original TRF remains valid, so you can choose whether to use your original or new TRF.
➜ Acceptance varies between universities, professional bodies and immigration authorities. Always confirm that your target organisation accepts One Skill Retake before booking.
Important before you book: One Skill Retake is most useful when the problem is genuinely limited to one skill. Before spending money on another attempt, identify exactly why you missed your target whether it was timing, task strategy, vocabulary, grammar, question interpretation or band criteria performance.
